Dear Uncle

Following his 2018 production of Single Spies and studio productions of Miss Julie and Creditors, Tom returned to Theatre by the Lake to direct Dear Uncle, Alan Ayckbourn’s version of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya.

Ayckbourn’s version relocates Chekhov’s classic to the Lake District in the 1930s, where a programme of ‘afforestation’ was clearing the natural landscape. This production was the play’s first revival, and the first not directed by the author.

“Director Tom Littler smartly reminds us that the fate of a whole household is at stake.” The Stage

“There are some wickedly funny set pieces and director Tom Littler makes the most of every drop of humour.” News and Star

“Riveting… Tom Littler’s direction achieves an excellent balance between farcical comedy and near tragedy.” Cumbria Life

“Two of the greatest names in the history of drama, eight outstanding performers, one inspired director, one perfect and natural setting: Dear Uncle makes an unforgettable impact here in Keswick.” Stagey Lady

“The cast work magic with Chekhov’s plot and convince us that this play was always intended for Cumbria… refreshing and relaxing.” Lancashire Life
